Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven

I think I’m getting old … The “we are going to pick two 18 year olds out of a coven full of adults to save everything” trope just doesn’t make sense to me anymore. I wouldn’t have thought twice about that when I was 18 but it just felt wrong now haha. But for most of the book I managed to forget their ages and pictured them as my own age. Does anyone else do that? Unless the book is about actual kids, I usually just assume they are my age, and, even if the author makes it clear they aren’t, I usually end up thinking of them as my age.
I did like the book! The age thing was more something I noticed about myself, and not actually a commentary on the book. The book was a fun and easy listen, which was exactly what I was looking for. At times it was very Harry Potterish, but I love HP so that didn’t bug me. The characters were likeable and relatable. I particularly liked Wade. He was kind of a misfit but he was incredibly observant, and did little things to help people out. Even though its part of a series, the author did close up the plot, and just left hints of the next story. That’s something I appreciate because I cannot stand cliffhangers. Overall it was good, but it wasn’t anything spectacular.
Somehow when I picked this I didn’t realize it was part of a series, but it became pretty apparent about halfway through the book. Like I mentioned before, there wasn’t a big cliffhanger, but we did learn some stuff that will obviously come back into the big-picture story later. When I looked it up I discovered there are currently 21 books, and it appears to be ongoing. That is a ridiculous amount of books and I don’t have the capacity to read that many right now!!! If it was 3 books I would continue but with it being 21 books I am going to have to call it quits before I even really start. It feels weird deciding not to read the series even though I enjoyed the book, but I am in the middle of two other series right now and I don’t want to add to that!
Yes! Like why did 15 year old me think it made sense to pick 18 year olds to take charge??? Hahaha

Haha I agree, it’s a trope that doesn’t make sense when you age out of it!

I guess it’s probably a fantasy self-insert thing when we’re young readers. π 21 books in a series is a lot to commit to. Most of the series I’m reading that are long ones, I started when they had fewer books in them and so were less intimidating. (Though of course, I haven’t kept caught up, and so now they’re intimidating all over again.)
