Friday Face Off: Fantasy Beast

Friday Face Off is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, and run by Lynn’s Book Blog.

May is also Wyrd & Wonder Month!

“The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow!”

This weeks theme:  A cover featuring a fantasy beast.

Finally an easy prompt!! I easily found 9 books with fantasy beasts! Now the only problem will be picking between them.

  • Blackjack (Pegasus) – The Titan’s Curse
  • Rats of NIMH – Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
  • Aslan (Lion) – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
  • Smaug (Dragon) – The Hobbit
  • Buckbeak (Hippogriff) – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Fawkes (Phoenix) – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Iorek Byrnison (Panserbjørn (armored bear)) – The Golden Compass
  • Pantalaimon (Daemon) – The Subtle Knife
  • Talking White Bear – East

The middle one has some sort of design layered over it? I don’t know if its a watermark on the picture or part of the actual cover, but I don’t like it.  The right cover I like a lot but I wish the Pegasus was in focus a bit more.

If it weren’t for those two things, I would have a hard time choosing my favorite between the two, but because of them I have to choose the other one:

Winner:

Titan03

Which is your favorite? Do you agree with my choice? Let me know in the comments!!

  1. Yes… I love the Exmo edition – but you’re right. What is going on with that watermark – it’s so distracting. Otherwise it would have been no contest. As it is, my favourite is Papyrus 2010. Great choice of book, by the way, Brittany:))

    1. I can’t tell if the watermark is part of the cover or if it is just one the picture or the cover? I tried googling it but was unsucessful 😦

The Papyrus 2010 reminds me of comic book covers, there are like 6 comics that all have the same style of the blue background with the black silhouette and the lightning. It is really cool!

  2. Ooh great quote! And great pick too. 🙂 Smaug and the Rats of NIMH are awesome choices too.

I like that first cover and the Exmo 2010 one as well. Those are probably my faves.

  3. I’m going to have to agree, I think you chose the best one. I do really like that middle one as well, it caught my eye right away. But that watermark is weird!

  4. I like how the theme of the week could easily translate into such a diverse response – I love cover art design in Fantasy & Sci Fi – especially old school cover designs where you can see the original artwork by illustrators – which has the tendency of being my favourites to choose between. I don’t oft get to see the foreign editions execept for a select few authors I might already read or have read in the past – I think you made the best choice for the author you’ve selected to examine. The ‘beast’ I am most critical of personally is how a dragon is depicted and how said dragon’s heart is visible within their portrayal.

    1. I love comparing covers ❤ and Fantasy & Sci Fi has some of my favorite covers!! I love Dragon covers too, but I like to stick to books I have read, which really narrowed it down to Eragon and The Hobbit. (I have read other books with Dragons but they don't have a lot of different editions.) I have already done Eragon in a FFO and The Hobbit just has too many covers!!
