The NOPE Book Tag

I love the word “Nope” its right up there with “Epic” and “Fail” on the list of words I probably shouldn’t use nearly as often as I do.

I was tagged by Marrill @ Books and Ravens.  Their “About” page states “I’m a Cabin 3 Gryffindor who obsesses over Piéra Forde and occasionally takes photos.” If that isn’t enough to convince you how awesome they are then you need to go check out their blog!! Right now! Seriously, Go! You can come back to my post later!

I couldn’t find rules or an original creator, so I am going to jump right into the tag!

NOPE. ending:

A book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy.

I didn’t really like any part of 1984, (the book not the year, I wasn’t alive in 1984) but the ending was particularly crappy.

NOPE. protagonist:

A main character you dislike and drives you crazy.

I honestly can’t think of one for this.  I am sure there are plenty of protagonists that drove me crazy, but I can’t think of any!

NOPE. series:

A series that turned out to be a huge pile of nope after you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it.

The Remnant Chronicles.  I loved the first book, the second book was just ok, and the third book was annoying.

NOPE. pairing:

A “ship” you don’t support.

I know this is a movie not a book but I do not support Black Widow and the Hulk! I loved Black Widow and Hawkeye!! They should have been together!

NOPE. plot twist:

A twist you didn’t see coming and didn’t like.

The ending/twist in Allegiant

NOPE. genre:

A genre you will never read.

Horror! I son’t do scary!

NOPE. book format:

A book format you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition.

I avoid buying editions that collect all the books in a series* into one edition because they are usually too big to carry around and actually read.  I would rather read all the books individually.  The exception is that if it is a series I have read and loved I will buy the collected works edition as a collectors copy.

*by series I mean either all the books in a series or all the books by a certain author, or really any grouping of books they would stick into one big book!

NOPE. trope:

A trope that makes you go NOPE.

Love Triangles!

NOPE. recommendation:

A book recommendation that is constantly pushed at you, that you simply refuse to read.

I don’t get a lot of books pushed at me but I feel like 50 Shades of Grey is wildly popular and I have been told I should read it.  I did gave it a try but never finished it and I refuse to try and read it again.

NOPE. cliché:

A cliché or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.

I hate the “you’re not like other girls” cliché!  All girls are different! You shouldn’t get props for being more different and you shouldn’t be ridiculed for being less different! Girls are awesome!

NOPE. love interest:

A love interest that’s not worthy of being one.

George Wickham! I know Elizabeth never really loves him, and that Kitty only fancies herself in love, but he is lowdown, no good, piece of scum!

NOPE. book:

A book that shouldn’t have existed.

Lord of the Flies.  That book is messed up!

NOPE. villain:

A villain you would hate to cross.

I wouldn’t want to cross any villains! But if I had to pick one in particular it would be Dolores Umbridge.

NOPE. death:

A character death that still haunts you.

I tend to get pretty attached to all the “good guy” characters so pretty much all their deaths haunt me, but here are some that really stood out:

  1. Tris (Allegiant)
  2. Izabel, The Brand, Sweet Boy, Kurti (Saga)
  3. Cedric Diggory, Sirius Black, Dumbledore, Hedwig, Mad-Eye Moody, Dobby, Fred, Remus Lupin, Tonks, Snape (Harry Potter)
  4. Brom (Eragon)

NOPE. author:

An author you had a bad experience reading and have decided to quit.

George R.R. Martin.  I read 4.5 of the 5 released books in the Song of Ice and Fire series.  I really enjoyed parts of the first 4 books, but I mainly kept reading to get to the chapters with Arya’s character.  There was a lot going on but I read them one right after another so I was able to keep track of what was going on. But then the 5th book is pretty much just the 4th book from different perspectives, which meant no Arya chapters! I got bored with it and never finished it.  The 6th book isn’t slated to come out till 2020 (according to goodreads)  That is waaaaay too long of a gap! I would need to re-read books 1-5 in order to understand the 6th book and I really don’t want to do that! So, I probably won’t ever finish reading the series.  And I won’t pick up any other books by George R.R. Martin because I am bitter about him taking such a long break from this series!

I tag:

As always, you don’t have to do this tag if you don’t want to! Also you don’t have to be tagged to do this tag! If you do it (whether tagged or not) send me your link in the comments and I will check it out!

  1. Yes Yes!! This is a great post. I feel like I can comment on just about every choice. We are so similar…I think I would have chose the same for most of these. I was so into Hawkeye and Black Widow too…then all of a sudden Hawkeye is married and stuffed….whoa… And I’ve heard such bad things about Remnant Chronicles. Like you, most people rave about the first book…but it goes down hill from there. :/

  2. Great tag!! I LOVE this one. It’s really interesting to see what people will “Nope” (I love that word too. Lol!)
I’m glad you chose George R R Martin for your author. He has so many books and they’re all SO LONG!! Who has that much to say?? HONESTLY! 😂🍻💖

  3. I was spoiled for the ending of Allegiant and still hated it! 2020 for Winds of Winter seems generous at this point believe me I can understand giving up. I just want to know what happens to Jaime and Sansa- George and if you can tell me in less than another decade and 500,000 words that’s fine by me 🙂
    Enjoyed this tag a lot!

  4. you stuck it out longer than I could with Song of Ice and Fire. I think I quit 4 chapters into book 3. And honestly, that took some coaxing to get that far. There was this one chapter from the Onion that Knight that almost did me in. It was all about the boat battle, but he just kept going on and on about the boats, and I wasn’t even paying attention. Anyway I say all that to say, I won’t be picking up anything else of Martin’s either.

    1. I had some scenes that I didn’t pay attention too! The only reason I stuck with it as long as I did was because I wanted to know what happened to Arya! He could just make a book with her story and I bet it would sell super well 🙂

  5. I don’t do horror either, but oh my gosh, that gif is awesome, haha. Honestly, I don’t even like ebooks that collect a bunch of books into one. I like to have an idea of how far into the book I am as I’m reading, but I can’t w/ those cuz the % is for the whole thing! I actually like love triangles though! But oh, yep, Umbridge is definitely a villain I wouldn’t want to cross.

    1. I have never tried to read a ebook that collects a bunch of books, but I could see how that would be a problem! I like to see the % I have left too. There a a few Love Triangles that I didn’t mind, but in general I don’t like them haha.

  6. I am 100% on the NOPE train with George R. R. Martin. NOPE. I also feel like he doesn’t care about his characters at all. What’s up with that? Sigh. I get filled with so much rage when people tell me they are waiting it out with GRRM.

The death which really got me? Rue from The Hunger Games. HEARTBREAKING

    1. I have mixed feelings about that. Sometimes it feels like he doesn’t care for his characters but it also makes it more intense to read because you don’t know if the characters are going to survive. Sometimes with most books you don’t really fear for your favorites because you know they are going to survive. So its kind of a cool experience to not know for sure. So I tried for a bit to wait it out but I am done haha.

Rue’s death was awful! It was so sad and the movie didn’t do it justice!

      1. That’s a really good point; if you don’t expect anyone could die at any time, there is an element of suspense missing. But, if I love my characters, I don’t mind if they survive everything Deus Ex Machina style. Most of the time. 🙂
